Photos-Lucy “Julia” Petorella

Imagine finding something out about yourself that comes as a complete surprise.
That is what happened to “Julia” when she ordered her birth certificate and the certificate below arrived.

It’s hard to say, for sure, how Lucy came to be called Julia.
On 4 Nov 1914, a baby girl was born to Domenico and Pearl.  The baby was named Julia.

Infant, Julia, died on 14 Mar 1915, just 4 months old.  I have been unable to locate any documentation regarding her death.

Photos-Palma “Sylvia” Petorella

Born Palma Petorella on 4 Oct 1912, she has always been known as Sylvia.  I have not been able to find her birth records.  Birth information comes from the reverse side of Domenico and Pearls marriage certificate where the names and birth dates of their five children are inscribed and the Social Security Death Index.

Photos-Magdaline “Mildred” Petorella

Magdaline was born 10 Feb 1909.  The 1910 U.S. Census indicated that Domenico, Pearl, and Magdaline lived at 622 S Aberdeen St, Chicago, IL. Domenic age 26, Pearl age 19 and Magdaline age 12/12 (1 yr.)

Also living in this building were Pearls Grandparents Francesco-61 and Magherita Scolaro-60 and cousins Josie-14, Annie-12, Sarah-8 and Frank-24.  In another apartment in the same building were cousin Antonino (eldest son of Francesco and Margherita) Scolaro’s family. Antonino-31, Rosie-29, Lauretta-6, Christina-4, Prudentia-2 and Annie-3.
Francesco, Antonino and Frank were all listed as peddlers.

Photos-Innocenzo Vigenzo Americo “James” Petorella

The Domenico and Pearl were living at 408 S Roby St., Chicago, IL when James was born. (name Roby St. was changed to Damen Ave and the 408 S Roby(Damen) address is now a Westbound on ramp to the Eisenhower Expressway.

By November of 1914, the family was living at 2556 W. Jackson Blvd.  The family lived there for roughly 20 years.  The photos above and below right were likely taken at that address.  There is a vacant lot where the Jackson Blvd residence (apartment building) once stood.

L to R-Julia, Mildred, Mickey the Dog and James Petorella. I believe this photo was taken very near their home on Jackson Blvd. Notice the Railroad viaduct in the background. It is my belief that the railroad goes over Jackson Blvd. at that point. Current images from Google show the vacant lot where the apartment building once stood and just to the west a railroad viaduct.

Two Petorella brothers

• Domenico, left; arrival in New York, 19 May 19026 Aug 1884
• Giacomo “James,” right; arrival in New York, 13 May 1903

As you may remember from a previous entry, there were three brothers and a sister: Charles (Angelo) b 16 Oct 1868, Domenico b and Giacomo b 8 Dec 1887.

I have not found facts about the sister except for a photo that indicates she is Julia Petorella Studlo’s aunt in Italy.

Domenico and Giacomo upon arrival went to live with their brother Angelo (Charles), as did a cousin, Teresa Petorella, who arrived in New York with Domenico.  Charles lived at 86 Thames St., Newport, RI.

Later, Domenico and Giacomo traveled the U.S. Two places we know they visited and even stayed for a time were Montana and New Orleans.  Domenico worked at the St. Charles Hotel in New Orleans.  It is unknown if Giacomo also worked there.

The two settled in Chicago, IL, where Domenico married Pearl Giunta.  It is said that Giacomo lived with Domenico and Pearl. The 1910 U.S. Census indicates that they lived at 622 S. Aberdeen but does not indicate that Giacomo resided with them.  

In 2 Jul 1913, Giacomo stepped on a nail, and was cared for at Frances Willard Hospital*.

Giacomo passed away on 11 Jul 1913 of lockjaw (tetanus.) His Death Certificate indicated he was born 8 Dec 1887 and he resided at 624 S Aberdeen St.

Giacomo Petorella is buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Section 11, Block 5, Lot 147,  in Hillside, Illinois and shares a grave with baby Julia Petorella (b 1914 d 1915.)

It is said the Giacomo played the guitar and loved to dance.
